An initiative in the San Martín region aims to restore 50 hectares of forest degraded by deforestation and fires, restoring biodiversity and improving the quality of life for local communities.

Semilla de Vida Reforestadoras project

Deforestation and forest fires have wreaked havoc in the San Martín region, one of the regions most affected by forest loss in the Peruvian Amazon. In 2024 alone, thousands of hectares of forest were destroyed, negatively impacting biodiversity, access to water, and the quality of life of local communities. In response to this environmental crisis, Redinter, with funding from Redeia and in partnership with the organization Ciudad Saludable, has launched the Semilla de Vida Reforestadoras project, an ambitious initiative that seeks to restore 50 hectares of degraded ecosystems in the Alto Mayo area.

The project not only aims to recover forest cover but also actively involves the local population in the reforestation process. It is expected to plant 25,000 seeds of native species with the participation of local communities, who will be trained in ecological restoration techniques and sustainable natural resource management. This strategy will directly benefit more than 271,000 people in the provinces of Moyobamba and Rioja, where deforestation has affected water availability, soil fertility, and ecosystem resilience to climate change.

The Semilla de Vida Reforestadoras project includes a series of key actions to ensure the success of reforestation:

  • Production and planting of native species.
  • Infrastructure and logistics improvements.
  • Training and community participation.
  • Monitoring and follow-up.
